Wine making kits, turbo yeast home : Winemaking Facts : Grape Varieties : Sangiovese

Wine making kits - Sangiovese

Wine making kits from Hambleton Bard are made mainly using Italian high quality grape concentrates. Our supplies of grapes come from the northern regions of the country, where the cooler climate produces a higher quality of winemaking grapes. All the international types are represented; like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling etc as well as Italian specialities like Nebbiolo (used for the famous Barolo wines) and Sangiovese.

Wine Kits - Sangiovese grapes

Sangiovese wine has an intense colour and can be quite harsh on its own so it is often mixed with others.

It is grown in the Tuscany region of Italy where it is used to produce the Chianti and other Tuscan red wines. There are several clonal versions of which two seem to predominate. The Sangiovese Grosso clone Brunello variety is used for the dark red, traditionally powerful and slow-maturing "Brunello di Montalcino" wine.

The other is the Sangiovese Piccolo, sometimes known under the historical synonym name Sangioveto, used for standard Chianti Classico DOC wines.

A third clone, Morellino, is used in a popular wine blend with the same name found in the southern part of the province.
