The hydrometer is the ultimate piece of testing equipment - the only one you really need, for making moonshine, home distilling, wine making and beer brewing. You can of course get yourself an alcohol meter (different ones if you want to check alcohol in wine or spirit - and there isn't a good one for beer so forget about that) for convenience, and a good thermometer is always worth having.
