Lambrusco

The Wine making kits from Hambleton Bard are mostly made with Italian quality grape concentrates. We source our grape supplies from the Italian northern regions where we believe the cooler climate produces higher quality winemaking grapes. In this part of Italy, all the international types like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling etc as well as Italian specialities like Nebbiolo (used for the famous Barolo wines) and Sangiovese can be found.

Wine Kits - Lambrusco

It is in fact more precise to talk about "Lambruschi" in the plural form. There are several different kinds of this vine, each of them spontaneous.

Spontaneous in this case means that they are grown from seeds coming from natural and casual notching of the flowers. The ancient Romans used the term "Lambrusche" for spontaneous vines.

The experts sustain that the original vine of Lambrusco was from Sorbara near Modena and from this, all the other varieties have developed.

The most important of todays "Lambruschi" are Sorbara, Salamino, Grasparossa and Marani. They have all quite similar morphological characteristics but produce very different wines.

The natural habitat of the "Lambruschi" is the floodplain of the Padana plant near Reggio Emilia, Modena and Mantova.

In these areas the soil is sandy, permeable, rich of organic substances and with a good humidity. These characteristics permit a high productivity and a unique incomparable quality.

The Lambrusco wines are obtained by blending the different types of grapes. Many of the wines are bottled slightly sweet in order to obtain a gassy wine after a light and slow secondary fermentation, although there are drier, more fullbodied types as well.
