Wine making kits - Piedmont |

![]() |
Wine making kits from Hambleton Bard - most are made using Italian high quality grape concentrates. Our supplies of grapes come from the northern regions where the cooler climate produces high quality winemaking grapes of all the international types like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling etc as well as Italian specialities like Nebbiolo (used for the famous Barolo wines) and Sangiovese. Piedmont - Piemonte in Italian - means "foot of the mountain", which is precisely where it is. The region is the origin of the legendary Barolo and Barbaresco wines. Among white wines the most well known is probably Asti Spumante, the famous sparkling wine.

With 38 DOC/DOCG zones Piedmont produces more quality controlled wine than any other Italian region. The production of wine in Piedmont is concentrated in three areas; Monferrato (the area surrounding Asti), Alessandria (near Alba) and Le "Langhe" (including Canelli). The wine zones are divided into two parts: the Alpine foothills to the north and the Monferrato and Langhe hills to the south. The climate of Piedmont is difficult for vinyards. Winters are cold with plenty of snowfall. Summers are warm and dry. Fog settles in around harvest time. Vineyards are planted in the strict belief that they belong on hills and not plains and they are harvested at some of the lowest yields in Italy. Piedmonts famous grape is the Nebbiolo, base of the Barolo wines. The region is the home of the Nebbiolo grape and this is virtually the only place in the world it can be found. |

The most well known wine from Piedmont is without question the Barolo. The history goes back to the 12th century when the Falletti family was granted titles of nobility. |
|
|
The Marchesi di Barolo cellars remained in the hands of the Falletti family until 1861 when Marchesa Giulia Falletti died without heirs. The Marchesa worked alongside with a French enologist and together they introduced new winemaking techniques that eventually transformed the once sweet wines from the Langhe region into the dry, full bodied world class Barolos of today. Since 1929 the Marchesi di Barolo cellars have been in the hands of the Abbona family. They have been very successful in building the Barolo brand which today is one of the great reds of the world. |
